I took my college drawing class to Devil's Lake for some plein air charcoal sketching in November. This was one of my favorite experiences during my time as an instructor at the university. It's impossible not to be inspired while working on location at Devil's Lake. I knew the students probably wouldn't normally take an afternoon to sketch there, and they told me afterward that it was an experience they wouldn't forget.
After class, the light was perfect. I set up my plein air easel and made a small oil painting of the East Bluff being hammered by golden-hour light. I later blew that painting up in the studio to create this larger interpretation. I have my students to thank for the inspiration behind this piece.
This is the original painting, an oil on canvas measuring 24 × 36". It is a large piece and will come framed.
