This barn sits near North Freedom at the base of the Baraboo Bluffs, and it will likely be gone soon. A huge hole has opened in the roof, and the old structure is rapidly deteriorating. The last time I painted here was about 15 years ago, when the hole was just beginning to appear.
For perhaps a century, this barn stood in the middle of some of the richest farmland in the area. There is something special about this land at the foot of the Baraboo Bluffs, fertile, beautiful, and deeply connected to the history of the people who worked it. Knowing that the barn may not be here much longer made painting it feel especially meaningful. I wanted to capture not just the shimmering light, but a moment in the life of a place that is slowly disappearing.
This is the original painting, an oil on canvas measuring 16 × 20" and will come framed.
